Below here are examples of questions posed to students to help them better populate their mental vision of the scenes that they are creating.

Scene 2

Coffee shop scene for passer-by

  • At the beginning of scene 2, you are to take turns to walk in and out of the coffee shop until after the radio announcement is over.  Why are you walking in and out of the coffee shop?  Are you buying drinks or chit chatting with friends?  Are you married?  Are you working?  When you see the gangsters, what do you do?  Quickly walk away or continue staying in the coffee shop?
  • You form the background scene as focus is on Xiao Fen/ Hong and grandma.  You can talk softly or gesture to the coffee shop owner.

Note: you are important because without you, the coffee shop will be too quiet.  It’s like no business in the coffee shop.  Very unreal.

Scene 2

The two rival gangs

  • Time your arrival at the coffee shop.
  • Which gang got there first?
  • What was the first gang doing before the second gang arrived?  Were they laughing or talking about something serious?  Whatever it is, there must be a change of mood when the second gang arrived.
  • As the two gangs are rivals, they must look hostile towards each other.  Show a contrast in appearance the minute the two gangs see each other.

Scene 3

Background scene

  • Injured people: You are injured!  Where are your injuries?  How bad?  Can you still move?
  • Women: who are you looking for?
  • Beggar: what are you doing?  Searching for what?  Stealing things from injured people?

Scene3

Mata & rioters

  • Mata: who are these rioters?  Why are you chasing them?
  • Rioters: why are you running away from the matas?  What did you do?
  • How did you accidentally stab grandma?
