NOMAD 2008 is enriched by additional strands of inquiry where students, led by their different subject teachers and facilitators investigate issues pertinent to the central theme of 1964.

Listed below is an overview of the various project strands, the facilitators and the students involved. This list will be continually updated with information as more works and products related to these project strands emerge.

Student work arising from these projects will be displayed at the Fringe Events as well as the Festival Finale on the 4th and 5th of July 2008.

1964 Singapore

Overall IC: Koh Chee Keong

Students Involved: All Secondary 4 and 5 Students

Synopsis: Students reflect on the way of life in Singapore during 1960s “(especially 1964), from politics, housing to social aspects. Students are free to present their reflection in various forms, such as comics, text, mind-mapping and drawings.

A Narrative of 1964

Overall IC: Seah Wan Cheng

Students Involved: All Secondary 2 Students

Synopsis:

Pupils research significant events that occurred in the year 1964 paying attention in particular to famous personalities born in that year, political movements, entertainment, discoveries etc. From this research, is produced cardboard/vanguard posters of information, all of which serve as the source material for the creation of authentic narratives.

An Oral History of Singapore in the 1960s

Overall IC: Alexander Choy

Students: Secondary Two Students

Communities Involved: AWWA Home, Community and Grassroot Leaders

Synopsis:

Pupils interview the selected interviewees on political and social issues in the 1960s, the school history and the Ang Mo Kio community. With the consent of the interviewees, pupils will video record the interviews as well as taking photographs of the interviewees. They will then transcribe the oral interviews into texts. Their works will be then be put up for display during NOMAD.

• A typical day of a housewife
• How Ang Mo Kio started as a new town

Exhibition: Film in the 1960s - A Heyday for Singaporean Film

Overall IC: Yip Pey Yee

Students: AMKSS Chinese Reading Club

Synopsis: This project strand aims to uncover the rich history of film in the 1960s in Singapore, paying particular attention to the then popular genre of the musical film. An exhibition including articles on famous personalities, the zeit-geist and famous films will accompany fringe festival performances and also be featured in the Festival Finale.

Fashion in the 1960s

Overall IC: Seah Wan Cheng

Synopsis:

Pupils conduct research on the fashion trends in the year 1964. Students then use the gathered material to design and/or duplicate fashion styles of the time using recyclable materials. Students then stage a mini-fashion show, about which, newspaper reports are written.

Mapping Ang Mo Kio - Ang Mo Kio from pre-1965 to the present day

Students Involved: Secondary Two Students

Synopsis:

With hands-on training conducted by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), students embark on the design and construction of two realistic models of Ang Mo Kio New Town to show the change and continuity of the new town from its pre-1965 days to its gradual transformation as a key housing estate in the centre of Singapore. The first model showcases Ang Mo Kio during its pre-1965 in its physical incarnation whereas the second model presents the town in its present day state.

Personal Recounts: Flashback to 1964

Students Involved: Secondary One Students

Synopsis:

Pupils identify people who have witnessed a significant event in the year 1964. These people may be parents, grandparents or relatives. Having met and gathered information from selected interviewees, they produce an essay in the form of a personal recount written from the perspective of the interviewees.

Using these stories, pupils have created 5-minute movie clips in which they role-play to capture the essence of the story of the interviewee.

The movie clips include the following elements:

  • Video clips
  • Music

Technology in the 1960s

Synopsis: Through independent online research, students have investigated scientific invention and the inexorable progress of technology in the 1960s. The insights gleaned from their insights into the science of the time have been presented in the form of display charts that will be up for display at the Fringe Festivals and at the Festival Finale.

Synopsis:

History is the telling of stories(讲古). Understanding our past helps us to appreciate the present and better chart our paths for the future. It also strengthens our identity as individuals in terms of one’s personal history and consolidates our history as a community.

The project endeavours to promote cross-generational communication between the youth and elders in the community through the sharing of stories.

The elders will be given the valuable opportunity to participate in the art-making process and pass on their rich life experience and/or historical legacy to the future generations through authentic storytelling. The youths, on the other hand, tell their stories by sharing their hopes and dreams for the future.

Its is hoped that through the process, both parties will gain a deeper understanding of the history of Ang Mo Kio Town, of the people who inhabit its space, of one another and of themselves.

The project will culminate in a short film which will be premiered as part of the NOMAD 2008 Festival Finale from the 3rd to the 5th of July 2008.
