PRESS RELEASE FOR AMKSS NOMAD 2008 FRINGE FESTIVAL

Ang Mo Kio Secondary School presents NOMAD 2008

Drama. Dance. Music .Visual Arts.

Come experience the swinging 60’s with us as we explore the theme of 1964 as part of
Ang Mo Kio’s biannual Arts Festival – NOMAD.

NOMAD represents a continually evolving tradition of the arts in Ang Mo Kio Secondary School (AMKSS). Started in 2001 as a showcase of the school’s submissions for the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), the biennial school production has since evolved into a festival of Student Work, with students creating scripts, story-lines, choreography, paintings and animations and music using the central theme of 1964 as their focus.

1964
This year’s theme 1964 explores the 1960s – a decisive period in the formative years of Singapore’s history. It was an era where the local cultural industries of music and motion pictures had their heyday and also a time where many of the challenges of independence and nationhood were most acute. Through the arts and with NOMAD as the platform,  we will set the stage for discussion of that arduous journey which led to the creation of the larger community of modern Singapore and thus helps students to learn about citizenship and Singapore’s past, present and future.

FRINGE FESTIVAL

In addition to the main festival from the 3rd to the 5th of July 2008, this year’s festival includes a fringe festival which features performances in collaboration between Artists, Youths and the performers from our local community. This is the first time that we have involved performers and artists who are living in the Ang Mo Kio area to share their gifts and talents with the community at large and as such, represent a major highlight of this year’s festival.
Consisting of 3 Fringe events, please see the short synopses below for more information on each of the individual events.
